Become a better chipper by getting feedback from your shots. Players are often focused on the outcome of the shot and not on the feedback from it!
Without feedback how do you know it will work again next time - was it a fluke, did you get an unexpected bounce?
The process of chipping is simple, get it on the ground and running like a putt as soon as possible. The feedback is "did you do what you wanted to do"? and here are my 3 keys to help with that:
Pick a landing spot - you can place a coin or a towel on the ground and try and hit it using and mid to high lofted club. When you do see what the roll out is. Each time you hit the spot does it roll out a similar distance?
Get the technique right - chipping is a low shot even with a lofted club. The technique itself is very little wrist hinge, so more like a putting action. If you find yourself hitting too high or far it's more than likely you have too much wrist action on the through swing so try and quieten it down.
Hit the ground - Many players try and lift the ball out of the grass especially if it's sat down a little. This leads to a scooping action and you hit up on the ball and generally thin it through the green. Have some practice swings were you ensure the bottom of the club interacts with the roots of the grass not just the top blades, then think of that when you're hitting the chip.
